Waffle II
I am going to mention the famous Belgian waffle in this entry. Waffles are eaten throughout the world, particularly in Belgium and the United States so if you are visiting Belgium, eating waffle is inevitable end. Without any doubt, I can say that Belgian Waffle is the best waffle that I’ve tasted until now. It is totally different from the others because it has really nice taste and appreciable smell.
The Reason of the Difference is: “DOUGH”
Besides eating waffle, I saw the preparation of the waffles in Brussels so it was really a chance for me. I noticed that the dough is very viscous. Till now I’ve already tasted waffles in Italy, Turkey and Belgium and I can say that the dough, which is made in Italy, or Turkey, was more watery and for this reason the aroma of the batter or dough cannot be perceivable. Although the selection of the toppings in other words flavorings is important, the main element of the waffle is the cake. The most important parameter for making a delicious cake, like all the other types of cakes, is the baking time and the temperature of the “waffle iron”. In addition the cake of the Belgian waffle has a very particular characteristic thanks to its ingredients. Its smell can be felt even there are other flavorings. The dough of the Belgian waffle is like cookies dough, it is more viscous than the dough of normal cakes.
Flavorings: Who can say no ?!
Toppings, which are put on the waffle, are the ingredients that give the flavor to the waffle. Actually, these toppings determine the type of the waffle because for all the types the cake is always the same. Even if some places have their own menu and types, usually you can choose the toppings that you want and you can allow them to prepare your waffle according to your preferences. Common toppings are strawberries, chocolate, sugar, honey, syrups, ice cream, and more.
Concerning the Belgian Waffle, the toppings of the typical Belgian waffle are: cream and strawberry. Americans discovered this yummy taste during 1950s thanks to some Belgian Waffle sellers and it had become popular in United States after 1964 New York World's fair. Now, waffle is very popular not only in Belgium but also in United States.
In Turkey, the waffle sellers prefer to use numerous ingredients and prepare the waffle as a sandwich instead of putting the things on it, as toppings. It is clearly more fulfilling however when lots of ingredients are used, the taste of the cake can’t be perceivable. Because of its sandwich form, eating Turkish waffle is quite difficult as well, whereas Belgian Waffle can be eaten with fork without any problem.
Waffles in Belgium
In Belgium, most waffles are served warm by street vendors and dusted with confectioner's sugar though in tourist areas they might be topped with whipped cream, soft fruit or chocolate spread. I had a chance to taste famous waffles in Bruges and Brussels. It is clear that the waffle which I tasted in Brussels is much more delicious. In Brussels, you can find the yummy waffles everywhere. Especially be careful, there will be lots of vendors when you are visiting the places that are located close to the main sights of the city.
TIP: There are lots of Waffle vendors on the narrow streets which are close to Grand Place - Grote Markt.
Home-made Waffle
According to your preference, you can prepare your own home-made waffle. First of all, you should prepare your waffle dough. By the way, do you have your “waffle iron” at your kitchen because without it, making your own waffle is impossible :)
