Review: Pizzeria Carminuccio – Salerno

After my last entry, this entry will be again about a Review of a pizzeria. Today I’ll share my impressions about one of the most outstanding pizzeria of Salerno in terms of the taste and quality of its pizzas. It’s not kind of a restaurant which is luxury however, it’s really popular. For thirty years, for many locals of Salerno, Pizzeria Carminuccio offers the best pizza in the city. In my first year in Italy, in 2010, I was asking to my Italian friends where the best pizza can be found in Salerno. Response to my question, I’ve heard lots of positive comments about the Carminuccio and that’s why I had tried it.
The pizzeria is located not in the city center of Salerno, however it’s not very far away from the center. By car, it will take maximum 10 minutes to reach there. Even if the location is not central, the restaurant is always full of people.

The restaurant is a cheap one and the prices are reasonable. Mainly, they generally ranged between 4 and 6 €. The service is so fast and well-organized. Once you order the pizza, they give you a number which refers your turn. And they are announcing your turn not only in Italian but also in French, German and English thanks to help of the technology. It’s really funny thing to see these announcements in different languages.

The amazing pizza: Margherita with rucola

All pizza types are really tasty for me. I have been there lots of times and I tried to taste all different kind of pizzas. Among the different tastes, my favorite one is “Bianco al cotto” which consists of cheese and prosciutto cotto (typical Italian ham). Prosciutto is a dry-cured ham that is usually thinly sliced and served uncooked; this style is called prosciutto crudo in Italian and is distinguished from cooked ham, prosciutto cotto. The combination of prosciutto with the delicious mozzarella cheese is really amazing.
The pizzeria does not exaggerate the amount of oil for the pizzas and the crust is not too much heavy. Generally, pizza is not kind of a food easy to digest. On the contrary, the pizzas of Carminuccio are very good due to the fact that, the dough of its pizzas is not too heavy and therefore, it’s easier to digest.

Besides their delicious pizzas, they have also “calzone” which is folded pizza. The typical “calzone” of the pizzeria is stuffed with tomato, mozzarella, and sauce. Calzone may include other ingredients that are normally associated with pizza toppings.

Calzone - One of my favorite ones.

In addition, the most basic one, Margherita, is also so yummy. Actually, in the region, Campania, there are lots of dairy factories and farms which produce the mozerella cheese of buffalo milk. Moreover, the agriculture of tomato is done commonly in the Campania region and that’s why there are numerous tomato producers and there is a huge industry of tomato.
In Campania, it’s possible to find really tasty tomato sauces which are prepared with the local tomatoes. In this frame, I think that the most delicious Margherita in the world only can be found in Campania region.

The classical pizzas in their menu are:
margherita,
napoletana,
marinara,
romana,
alla diavola con salame piccante, this is the type for whom likes spicy and hot.
alla scarola con olive e capperi, this type is the "light" pizza.
ai funghi porcini;
al prosciutto crudo o cotto;
alla provola e pancetta;
con prosciutto e rucola;
e con wurstel e patatine this type of pizza for me is too heavy and I don’t like it.

See you in the next entry and don’t forget that, as Bernard Shaw stated, “There is no sincerer love than the love of food.”

The restaurant deserves 5 stars out of 5!
