WAFFLE I
After a long time, now I am ready for a new entry. I couldn’t have a chance to write a new entry during this period because of the exams and my trip. Even I could not write anything, fortunately I had a chance to collect a number of entry subjects to share with you. I tasted different traditional foods of the cities that I’ve visited, and I found out new things about the foods during this trip. I will share my experiences in the following entries, so now I am starting with “WAFFLE”.
Waffle is a really popular dessert all over the world. However, of course it has departure point. The first waffle is baked between wafer irons as very light thin crisp cakes in Belgium. Now all over the world waffle is cooked by using different way of cooking or in different shapes with different thicknesses. But in any case Belgium is the country that should come to our mind directly. This is the reason why I will focus on Belgium waffle but before sharing my impressions about the yummy Belgian waffle, I want to mention waffle in general.
What is waffle?
Waffle is kind of a cake that is usually served with some additional ingredients. This ingredients vary according to the preferences however the aim of the using them is always the same, they are used as flavorings. The shape of the cooked batter1 or dough shows diversity as well. Thanks to different moulds locating in the waffle iron, you can make your waffle with different shapes.
What is waffle iron?
The waffle iron is a cooking apparatus that is used specifically for making waffles. This apparatus has two parallel metal plates. Generally, iron is used as a metal. The batter or dough is poured between the plates and then waffle iron is closed. The iron is heated by electrical energy as we said before. Like all the other foods, the temperature and the time of the cooking is extremely important. The temperature should be neither too hot nor too cold. If the heat on the plates is too high, the dough will seem cooked in a short time although the internal part is unbaked. If the temperature of the plates is too low, then the dough can stick on the plates and you can’t obtain a uniform shape.
In order to prevent these undesired cooking problems, engineers are trying to generate non sticky materials. Nowadays, Most of waffle irons are coated with a non-stick coating to prevent the waffles from sticking to them. From the engineering point of view, the used material for the waffle is very significant as well because it can cause “migration2”. For this reason, selection of the material and its quality are really crucial for all the kind of food products.
I don’t want to make this subject boring so, I will not focus on the engineering point of the view in depth. Lastly, I want to share with you the different waffle shapes thanks to numerous types of the waffle iron moulds.
DO YOU KNOW?
Wafer and waffle share common etymological roots. Wafre ("wafer") occurs in Middle English by 1377, adopted from Middle Low German wâfel, with the l changed to r.
