One day in Sorrento
This entry will be travel writing. Last week, on
Sunday, I had a chance to realize one of my dreams which I’ve desired to do for
a lot of time. I went to Sorrento. On this entry, I will try to share with you my
impressions in Sorrento and of course, some typical components of the cuisine
of South Italy. Sorrento is located on the gulf of Naples. Instead, Amalfi and
Positano are located on the other side of peninsula. While we were on the bus
for going to Sorrento from Amalfi, I could see the two different gulfs at the
same time: Gulf of Salerno, Gulf of Naples. It was a great thing to see the sea
both on the right and left side. Even if the trip on the bus was tiresome, it’s
worth going there.

)
Note: The bus trip from Amalfi to Sorrento is
exhausting. For that reason, taking train from Naples station could be a good
alternative.
INFO Sorrento: Sorrento (Neapolitan: Surriento) is a
small town in Campania, southern Italy, with some 16,500 inhabitants. It is a
popular tourist destination which can be reached easily from Naples and
Pompeii, as it lies at the south-eastern end of the Circumvesuviana rail line.
The town overlooks the Bay of Naples as the key place of the Sorrentine
Peninsula, and many viewpoints allow sight of Naples itself, Vesuvius and the
Isle of Capri (Wikipedia).
Tasso Square. The center of Sorrento. This is exactly a cute town!
Regarding the cuisine, there are lots of typical
tastes which you can see in Sorrento. Some of them are famous also in other
small towns.
First of all, like other small towns, lemon and by
products of lemon such as limoncello
(lemon liquor), lemon soaps can be seen in almost every souvenirs in Sorrento. Limoncello is tasty liquor and it has a
particular taste. It consists of alcohol, lemon peel (just the yellow part of
peel), water and sugar. Instead different typical liquor made by lemon exists
also: Crema di limoncello. It is not
famous as much as Limoncello, however
for me it’s more delicious.
Basically, “Creama di limoncello” consists of lemon peel, sugar, milk, cream and sugar. Limoncello has a yellow color whereas Creama di Limoncello has a white like color.
In addition, Sorrento is famous with its pizza. At
this region, especially in Naples, there are numerous pizza restaurants which
serve typical and delicious pizzas with reasonable prices. The pizza of
Sorrento is particular since there is a famous pizza restaurant in Sorrento, “l'università della pizza” (Pizza
University). They invented the way of serving pizzas by meters. Therefore, it’s
so special pizza restaurant and it serves traditional Napoletan pizza with a
different form and shape. Unfortunately, I couldn’t go there, however I know
that it’s so famous.
Small and cute streets of Sorrento.
Also, in Sorrento, it’s possible to come across some
small shops which sell different types of home-made pastas, olive oils and
wines. These are typical tastes of Italy. Especially Campania region is very plentiful
in terms of not industrial olive oil, wine and pasta production. Also, fresh
fruits and vegetables are found everywhere.
In Sorrento, there are lots of restaurants too. They
are not expensive as much as the restaurant which are located in Capri.
Tourists can easily come across to the ice cream vendors, pastry and sandwich
sellers as well.
Delicious olive oils and home made pasta types.
As I've said before, fresh fruit types are everywhere in Sorrento.
Shopping from cute greengrocer.
Pasta types. They seem delicious, are not they?
We came across to the street musicians in front of a restaurant.
It was a really great performance.
The town offers you great panorama of the gulf as
well. The view of the gulf of Naples is amazing. The volcano, Vesuvius, can be
seen clearly. Even if there is a small public beach, you can also swim or tan
in Sorrento. The sea was cold when we were there, however it was extremely
clean.
The locals are so friendly, and we had a calm day without
stress in Sorrento thanks to peaceful atmosphere of the town.
See you on the next entry, Bye!
