La Boqueria

I will try to share my impressions about the one of the most famous market in Spain. It is called “Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria” but generally it is said as “La Boqueria” with an easy way. It has very central location in Barcelona and also it is very touristic place. It is located on “La Rambla” which is  the main street of Barcelona. 

First I am going to mention “La Rambla”a little bit. This street is very charming and generally full of people especially in the summers and on the tourist season. There are lots of shops of famous clothing brands from all over the world and some restaurants and cafes that you can automatically feel yourself in Catalunya.  The length of the street is 1.2 kilometer and there are Gotic Buildings on the both sides of the street.

What about “La Boqueria” ? As I stated before, It is a public and touristic market in Barcelona. It has a significant history that has to be cared. The first mention of the Boqueria market in Barcelona dates from 1217, when tables were installed near the old city gate to sell meat. From December 1470 onwards, a pig market was held at this site; at this time it was known as Mercat Bornet. 

There are lots of greengrocers, fish sellers and some cafe and restaurants. The restaurants are generally small and you have to eat standing but the quality and the taste of the meals are very good. In addition the prices in these restaurants are not high very much.

Spain is relatively big country and as everybody know Canary Islands belong to Spain and this island is located closer to equator than Spain. For this reason the varieties of the vegetables and fruits are very ample even during winter tropical fruits can be available. This abundance normally has great influence on the variaties in “La Boqueria”.

You can buy some mixed fruits or one piece or slice of watermelon for 1 euro and the mushroom sellers get my attention during the stroll on “La Boqueria”. There are lots of kinds and I am sure that you can cook different meals with different kind of mushrooms.

I strongly recommend people who come to visit Barcelona have to visit “La Boqueria” and taste some interesting and tasty fruits. If you don’t visit “La Boqueria” it will mean that you have not been in Barcelona !.
