Netherlands & Food IV
During the last 3 entries, I mentioned the foods and food products in Netherlands. Finally this post will be the last entry about the Dutch Cuisine. In other 3 entries, I shared the things that interesting for me, for that entry I will keep on writing about remarkable things.
First of all, I would like to mention the dessert that is generally sold by street vendors. In the last entry, I talked about it a little bit, now it is time to give some information in depth. The name of the dessert is Oliebollen, that is a Dutch pastry eaten on New Year's Eve. Oliebol is a traditional dutch food, and the dough is made from flour, eggs, yeast, water, milk, salt, baking powder, sultanas. Luckily, while we were in Netherlands, it was just before the Christmas and we tasted delicious Oliebols.
This typical Dutch food, Oliebollen, is fried pastry. The dough is salty but it consists of sultanas and powdered sugar used as topping. The taste of the dough is quite similar to Turkish lokma. If you are thinking of visiting Netherlands, do not miss it !! (The picture is taken from wiki)
After this pastry, I would like to share the thing that was really interesting for me. We've been in supermarkets in Eindhoven and I realized that there are lots of different types of frozen pizzas. After Italy, it was very surprising for me to see various kind of frozen pizzas. I think that Dutch people prefer to buy them and eat them easily without losing time thanks to microwave. On the contrary, it is very diffucult to find these high variety in Italy but isn't it so normal ? Italy is a contry that is famous all over the world thanks to its delicious pizzas.
This picture was taken in one of the biggest supermarkets in Eindovhen. As you can see, there are lots of different types of frozen pizzas. For my case, I think like this: who needs to eat them after being a long time in Italy ?
Edam (Dutch Edammer) is a Dutch cheese traditionally sold in spheres with a pale yellow interior and a coat of red paraffin wax. It is named after the town of Edam in the province of North Holland, where the cheese is coated for export sale and for the tourist high season. After aging for at least 17 weeks the cheese sphere is coated with black wax, rather than the usual red or yellow (wiki)
Edam cheese is sold in open market in Amsterdam. Different types, different tastes !!
I took this picture in Amsterdam. Because of the high prices in the resaturants, sometimes eating from these small pastry sellers could be a good choice to make you feel full without spending a lot. However if we want to compare them with Italy, the prices still are very high relatively.
Hard Rock cafe !! In Amsterdam, we came across the Hard Rock Cafe. You can have a beautiful time there with nice music and an amazing atmosphere . You can see the famous people's clothes and stuffs and eat very delicious foods there. I love their legendary burgers !!! Next to the restaurant, there is also small store where you can buy T-shirts, and souvenirs.
-Organic fruits from Amsterdam- Finally I mentioned all the things that I desired to share with you. Of course, this is not the all ! there are more typical foods very particular in Netherlands. It's not an easy thing to explain all the things in depth. Also, as a student, I was not able to eat in a restaurant that is really expensive. The things which I've shared, were the things that I really experienced. I strongly suggest you to visit Netherlands, eat the french fries and Oliebollen and see this lovely country !!
The End
