Amalfi - Lemons

Amalfi, homeland of lemons! When someone talks about Amalfi, automatically lemons come to my mind. We’re talking about extremely delicious Italian lemons. Thanks to these lemons, Italian cuisine has various foods and desserts. Especially for the preparation of some kinds of ice-creams and drinks, these aromatic lemons are so important.
Luckily I’ve been living in Salerno which is located below Napoli. This region, Campania, has a very warm climate, even during the winter, the temperature is always higher than 0 0C. So as you can understand, although some periods are very rainy, the sun shows itself almost every day. And this climate is very convenient for lemons. Especially the coast situated along Amalfi, there are lots of fields on which the agriculture of lemons is done.
You can find different shapes and size of lemons, even like a size of melon. When I made my first visit to Amalfi, it was very suprising thing to see this huge lemons.
The agriculture of the lemons is done very commonly so that you can feel the odor of the lemons, when you are walking on the narrow streets of Amalfi. Lemons are also very aromatic. They have a particular taste and odor. For that reason, on this region it is easy to find some foods that made by lemons traditionally. Especially desserts are so delicious.
Delizia al limone. Italians are calling this amazing dessert like that. In English we can translate it directly as "Delight of lemons". I stongly recommend you to taste this particular taste, when you visit Amalfi.
Especially if your trip encounter to summer days, you are lucky. You can taste this incredible ice-cream. Go to one "gelateria" which means a place that selling ice-cream. And then, choose your favourite ice-cream. In Italy, Ice-cream types are dividing into 2 different groups: Sorbet and Gelato. Gelato is prepared by using milk, whereas sorbet is made by just water. Both of them have particular taste.
In Amalfi, you can come across lots of shops that are selling some products made with lemons. From limoncello to lemon soaps, from towels with lemon motifs, to ceramics with lemon images you will see beautiful products. Soaps are smelling very good ! Don't foget to buy something :)
One cute shop from Amalfi. Typical South Italian alcoholic drink “Limoncello” can be found everywhere in Amalfi. Almost every touristic shop are selling these kind of drinks in different shapes of bottles. In my opinion it has a great taste.
TIP:
Amalfi is a very touristic place and also it is very famous places thanks to their ceramics. It is a small town and you can see one of the most beautiful panoramas there. Generally the prices for foods and souvenirs are high. If you visit Amalfi, you should see also the church of the town “Duomo”.

If we would like to compare the limoncello with artificial limoncello, of course the taste of the Amalfi's limoncello will be better than the artificial limoncello which are sold in supermarkets. Of course the best choice can be making your own home-made limoncello at your home :)

Drinking limoncello for Italians is more meaningful than just drinking an alcoholic drink. It’s a part of a culture! After the dinners and lunch especially on Sundays, Italians like drinking limoncello as liquor. They are calling these kinds of liquors as digestives.
As you can see from this image, there are lots of different types of products.

To sum up, if you’re looking for an Italian lemon to beat all others Italian lemons, you’ve come to the right place. These excellent Amalfi Coast lemons are gorgeously juicy and have very little pips to get in the way. They are medium-large, with a thick, rough skin and intense aroma. They are superb for any cooking that requires using the skin as they are unwaxed – a much desired quality.

If you think of coming to visit South Italy, for sure you should visit Amalfi coast and taste these lemons.

I just visited Amalfi last week and fell in love with all of it. My daughter and I enjoyed some lemon sorbet and purchased some of the lovely ceramics, lemon cello and lemon soaps. It was difficult to leave this wonderful place. Do you know if the lemons can be purchased online? If so, I would appreciate the website address.
Thank you, Pam
